Dua For Rain: Ask Allah To Make It Beneficial Rain

Dua For Rain: Ask Allah To Make It Beneficial Rain

Making dua for rain is called istisqa’.

Istisqa’ is something that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions commonly did. Its evident in many ahadith. They would make dua for beneficial rain (not just rain) during drought. If rain became troublesome for them, they’d make dua for rain to stop.

They would also make dua after it had rained, acknowledging that it was through Allah and not some form of shirk.

The duas for rain below are ones that we can recite during our daily lives in order to ask for beneficial rain.

Dua During Drought

Allahumma asqina ghaythan mughithan mari’an mari’an, nafi’an ghayra dharrin, ajilan ghayra ajil.

O Allah! give us rain which will replenish us, abundant, fertilising and profitable, not injurious, granting it now without delay.

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah:
The people came to the Prophet (ﷺ) weeping (due to drought). He said (making supplication): O Allah! give us rain which will replenish us, abundant, fertilising and profitable, not injurious, granting it now without delay. He (the narrator) said: Thereupon the sky became overcast. Sunan Abi Dawud

Dua For Rain To Come

Allahumma asqina, allahumma asqina, allahumma asqina.

O Allah! Bless us with rain! O Allah! Bless us with rain! O Allah! Bless us with rain!

Dua For Rain To Stop

Allahumma hawalaina wala ‘alaina, allahumma ‘alal aakaami wal-jibali wal-aajaami wadh-dhirabi wal-audiyati wamanabitish shajar.

O Allah! Round about us and not on us. O Allah! On the plateaus, on the mountains, on the hills, in the valleys and on the places where trees grow.

Narrated Sharik bin `Abdullah bin Abi Namir:
I heard Anas bin Malik saying, “On a Friday a person entered the main Mosque through the gate facing the pulpit while Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutba. The man stood in front of Allah’s Apostle and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! The livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; so please pray to Allah for rain.'” Anas added, “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) raised both his hands and said, ‘O Allah! Bless us with rain! O Allah! Bless us with rain! O Allah! Bless us with rain!'”

Anas added, “By Allah, we could not see any trace of cloud in the sky and there was no building or a house between us and (the mountains of) Sila.” Anas added, “A heavy cloud like a shield appeared from behind it (i.e. Sila’ Mountain). When it came in the middle of the sky, it spread and then rained.” Anas further said, “By Allah! We could not see the sun for a week.

Next Friday a person entered through the same gate and at that time Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was delivering the Friday’s Khutba. The man stood in front of him and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! The livestock are dying and the roads are cut off, please pray to Allah to withhold rain.'” Anas added, “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) I raised both his hands and said, ‘O Allah! Round about us and not on us. O Allah! On the plateaus, on the mountains, on the hills, in the valleys and on the places where trees grow.’ So the rain stopped and we came out walking in the sun.” Sharik asked Anas whether it was the same person who had asked for the rain (the last Friday). Anas replied that he did not know. Sahih al-Bukhari

Dua At The Time Of Rain

Dua For Approaching Clouds

O Allah, we seek refuge with You from the evil of that with which it is sent.

Dua For Beneficial Rain

Repeat two or three times.

Allahumma sayyiban nafi’an.

O Allah, a beneficial rain.

‘Aishah narrated that when the Prophet (ﷺ) saw a cloud approaching from any horizon, he would stop what he was doing, even if he was praying, and turn to face it, then he would say:
“Allahumma inna na’udhu bika min sharri ma ursila bihi (O Allah, we seek refuge with You from the evil of that with which it is sent).” Then if it rained he would say: “Allahumma sayyiban nafi’an (O Allah, a beneficial rain),” two or three times. And if Allah dispelled it and it did not rain, he would praise Allah for that. Sunan Ibn Majah

Dua For After Rain

.Muthirnaa bifadhlillaahi wa rahmatihi

We have had a rainfall due to the Blessing and Mercy of Allah.

It is narrated on the authority of Zaid b. Khalid al-Juhani:
The Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) led the morning prayer at Hudaybiya. There were some marks of the rainfall during the night. At the conclusion of prayer he turned towards people and observed: Do you know what your Lord has said? They replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) remarked: He (Allah) said: Some of My bondsmen entered the morning as My believers and some as unbelievers. He who said: We have had a rainfall due to the Blessing and Mercy of Allah, he is My believer and a disbeliever of stars, and who said: We have had a rainfall due to the rising of such and such (star) disbelieved Me and affirmed his faith in the stars. Sahih Muslim
