Dua For Sneezing And In Reply To Sneezing

Dua For Sneezing And In Reply To Sneezing

Did you know that responding with the dua for sneezing is the right of a Muslim on another Muslim?

Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the salaam, visiting the sick, to follow the funeral processions, to accept an invitation, and to reply to those who sneeze.

Sahih al-Bukhari

The dua for sneezing comes in three parts:

  1. The Muslim who sneezed praises Allah
  2. His brother or companion asks Allah to have mercy on him
  3. The Muslim who sneezed asks Allah to guide his brother or companion

Here’s a breakdown of how to say the dua for sneezing in Arabic:

Dua For Sneezing

When You Sneeze, Say:

.الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

Alhamdulillah.

Praise be to Allah.

After Someone Sneezes, You Say To Them:

.يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ

Yarhamukallah.

May Allah have mercy on you.

What Do You Say After Someone Says Yarhamukallah?

.يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

Yahdeekumul-lahu wa yuslihu balakum.

May Allah guide you and put your affairs in order.

Abu Salih reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “When one of you sneezes, he should say, ‘Praise be to Allah.’ When he says, ‘Praise be to Allah, ‘ his brother or companion should say to him, ‘May Allah have mercy on you.’ Then let the person who sneezed say, ‘May Allah guide you and put your affairs in order.'”

Sneezing And Yawning In Islam

Dua for sneezing
Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning

If a Muslim sneezes and then praises Allah, its obligatory on every Muslim who heard him to say “yarhamukallah”.

Yawning is disliked by Allah and is from Shaitan. It’s best that we try and stifle a yawn if we feel one coming on.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning, so if someone sneezes and then praises Allah, then it is obligatory on every Muslim who heard him, to say: May Allah be merciful to you (Yar-hamuka-l-lah). But as regards yawning, it is from Satan, so one must try one’s best to stop it, if one says ‘Ha’ when yawning, Satan will laugh at him.”

Sahih al-Bukhari

“Yarhamukallah” is said to a Muslim after they’ve sneezed and praised Allah.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Two men sneezed before the Prophet. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to one of them, “May Allah bestow His Mercy on you,” but he did not say that to the other. On being asked (why), the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “That one praised Allah (at the time of sneezing), while the other did not praise Allah.”

Sahih al-Bukhari

It’s not necessary to respond to a Muslim who’s sneezed more than three times.

It was narrated from Ilyas bin Salamah bin Akwa’ that his father said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘The one who sneezes may be responded to three times; if he sneezes more than that, he has a cold.'”
