First Night Dua You Should Make After Your Wedding

Reciting an Arabic first night dua after your wedding is sunnah.

One is a first night dua for the groom and the other is a dua to recite before having sexual intercourse.

Du’a For Groom On Wedding Night

When you’re in seclusion with your new wife, place your hand on her forehead. As you do so, recite the following Arabic first night dua to seek refuge with Allah.

Allahumma innee as’aluka khayraha, wa khayra ma jabaltaha ‛alayh, wa a‛oodhu bika min sharriha, wa sharri ma jabaltaha ‛alayh.

“O Allah, I ask You for the goodness within her and the goodness that you have made her inclined towards, and I seek refuge with You from the evil within her and the evil that you have made her inclined towards.”

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr:
that the Prophet said: “When anyone of you gets a new wife, a servant, or an animal, let him take hold of the forelock and say: Allahumma inni as`aluka min khayriha wa khayri ma jubilat ‘alaihi, wa ‘audhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jubilat `alaih (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness within her and the goodness that she is inclined towards, and I seek refuge with You from the evil to which she is inclined).’ ”

Du’a Before Sexual Intercourse

It’s halal to reveal your ‘awrah to your spouse after your nikkah. You’re free to see, touch and interact with each other, within the limits of Shariah.

Sexual intercourse isn’t necessary on the first night of marriage in Islam. It’s up to you two to decide when you’re ready.

If you do decide to get intimate, recite the following du’a before unclothing.

بِسْمِ اللهِ اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ، وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْـتَنَ

Bismillah. Allahumma jannibnash-Shaitana, wa jannibish-Shaitana ma razaqtana.

In the Name of Allah. O Allah, keep the Shaitan away from us and keep the Shaitan away from what You have blessed us with.

Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If anyone intends to have (sexual intercourse) with his wife, he should say: “Bismillah! Allahumma janibnash-Shaitana, wa jannibish-Shaitana ma razaqtana (In the Name of Allah, O Allah! Keep us away from Satan and keep Satan away from what You have bestowed upon us);’ and if Allah has ordained a child for them, Satan will never harm him.”

Recommended Book

Whether you’re already married, or pondering marriage, I strongly suggest that you give yourself a refresher on the fiqh of marriage.

“The Fiqh of Marriage in the Light of the Qur’an and Sunnah”, by Dr. Saalih ibn Ghaanim al-Sadlaan, covers everything that you need to know:

  • The place of the dower
  • The minimum and maximum amount of the dower
  • When the woman is entitled to all, half or none of her dower
  • The rights of husband and wife in Islam
  • Sexual etiquette in Islam
