Henna (Arabic: حِنَّاء‎) is a dye prepared from the plant Lawsonia inermis, also known as hina, the henna tree , the mignonette tree, and the Egyptian privet, the sole species of the genus Lawsonia.

Henna

Henna has been used for thousands of years in cultures across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Its main uses are for medicine and decoration of the body.

In Islam, applying henna is a sunnah (a practice of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ). It’s sunnah for men to apply henna to their hair and beard.

Ibn Sirin reported:
Anas b. Malik was asked whether Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) dyed his hair. He said: He had not become old enough to have white hair. Ibn Idris said that he had a few white hair. Abu Bakr and Umar, however, dyed hair with hina’ (henna).

Sahih Muslim

Women are permitted to apply henna on their fingers, fingernails, hands, palms and feet. In fact, it’s mustahhab (recommended) to do so.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin:
A woman made a sign from behind a curtain to indicate that she had a letter for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) closed his hand, saying: I do not know this is a man’s or a woman’s hand. She said: No, a woman. He said: If you were a woman, you would make a difference to your nails, meaning with henna.
