10 Important Surahs To Read And Their Benefits

10 Important Surahs To Read And Their Benefits

In the Qur’an, there are several important surahs to read. These surahs have numerous benefits, which Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has reported in many ahadith.

The surahs discussed in this post are outlined below:

Surah Fatiha Benefits

Important surahs to read

Ruqyah is treatment for things such as sihr (magic), masaha (possession) and al-‘ayn (evil eye).

In the hadith below, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) acknowledged that Surah Fatiha can be recited on someone for ruqyah.

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:
While we were on one of our journeys, we dismounted at a place where a slave girl came and said, “The chief of this tribe has been stung by a scorpion and our men are not present; is there anybody among you who can treat him (by reciting something)?” Then one of our men went along with her though we did not think that he knew any such treatment. But he treated the chief by reciting something, and the sick man recovered whereupon he gave him thirty sheep and gave us milk to drink (as a reward). When he returned, we asked our friend, “Did you know how to treat with the recitation of something?” He said, “No, but I treated him only with the recitation of the Mother of the Book (i.e., Al-Fatiha).” We said, “Do not say anything (about it) till we reach or ask the Prophet (ﷺ) so when we reached Medina, we mentioned that to the Prophet (in order to know whether the sheep which we had taken were lawful to take or not). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “How did he come to know that it (Al-Fatiha) could be used for treatment? Distribute your reward and assign for me one share thereof as well.” Sahih al-Bukhari

Surah Baqarah Benefits

Prevent Shaitan From Entering Your House

Shaitan runs from the house in which Surah Baqarah is being recited.

Narrated Abu Hurairah:
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Do not turn your houses into graves. Indeed Ash-Shaitan does not enter the house in which Surat Al-Baqarah is recited.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi

When the inhabitants of a house’s hearts are dead, the house turns into a grave (in a spiritual sense).

Recite Surah Baqarah in order to prevent the effects of the Shaitan on you and your family.

Surah Baqarah And Surah Ali ‘Imran Will Plead On Your Behalf

The Qur’an will appear in a human-like form on the Day of Judgement.

It was narrated from Ibn Buraidah that his father told that the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said:
“The Quran will come on the Day of Resurrection, like a pale man, and will say: ‘I am the one that kept you awake at night and made you thirsty during the day.” Sunan Ibn Majah

A hadith in Riyad as-Salihin states that the Qur’an can make a case on your behalf on the Day of Judgement. It will plead for its companion who recited and acted upon it. Particularly, Surah Baqarah and Surah Ali ‘Imran.

An-Nawwas bin Sam’an (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “The Qur’an and its people who applied it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection preceded with Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al-‘Imran arguing on behalf of those who applied them.” Riyad as-Salihin

Az-Zahrawain

Surah Baqarah and Surah Ali ‘Imran are known as Az-Zahrawain, meaning, the two beautiful, glowing, glittering ones.

Both of these surahs will appear on the Day of Judgement as harmless, puffy-looking clouds. They will descend over those who recited and acted upon Az-Zahrawain.

Narrated An-Nawwas bin Sam’an:
that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The Qur’an shall come, and its people who acted according to it in the world. Surat Al-Baqarah and Al ‘Imran shall be in front of it. An-Nawwas said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stated three parables about them which I have not since forgotten, he said: “They will come as if they are two shades between which there is illumination, or as if they are two shady clouds, or as if they are shadows of lines of birds arguing on behalf of their people.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Believe me, everyone will want to have that advantage on the Day where there is no shade, except for Allah’s.

The Day Of Judgement

If you need a good reminder of how harsh and intense that Day will be, you can find it in the hadith below.

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “On the day of Resurrection Allah will say, ‘O Adam!’ Adam will reply, ‘Labbaik our Lord, and Sa`daik ‘ Then there will be a loud call (saying), Allah orders you to take from among your offspring a mission for the (Hell) Fire.’ Adam will say, ‘O Lord! Who are the mission for the (Hell) Fire?’ Allah will say, ‘Out of each thousand, take out 999.’ At that time every pregnant female shall drop her load (have a miscarriage) and a child will have grey hair. And you shall see mankind as in a drunken state, yet not drunk, but severe will be the torment of Allah.” (22.2) (When the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned this), the people were so distressed (and afraid) that their faces got changed (in color) whereupon the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “From Gog and Magog nine-hundred ninety-nine will be taken out and one from you. You Muslims (compared to the large number of other people) will be like a black hair on the side of a white ox, or a white hair on the side of a black ox, and I hope that you will be onefourth of the people of Paradise.” On that, we said, “Allahu-Akbar!” Then he said, “I hope that you will be) one-third of the people of Paradise.” We again said, “Allahu-Akbar!” Then he said, “(I hope that you will be) one-half of the people of Paradise.” So we said, Allahu Akbar.” Sahih al-Bukhari

Protective Clouds Described In Surah Baqarah

This isn’t a benefit of Surah Baqarah, but just an interesting point I’d like to make. The concept of protective clouds is presented in Surah Baqarah itself.

And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], “Eat from the good things with which We have provided you.” And they wronged Us not – but they were [only] wronging themselves. Qur’an 2:57

When the Children of Israel were wandering around Sinai, there was no shelter for them anywhere. Through His mercy, Allah sent clouds to protect them from standing in the scorching sun.

Ayatul Kursi Benefits

Ayatul Kursi is verse 2:255.

When you recite Ayatul Kursi before sleep, Allah will send a guardian over you in return. The Shaitan won’t approach you until dawn.

Narrated Muhammad bin Sirin:
Abu Huraira said, “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) put me in charge of the Zakat of Ramadan (i.e. Zakat-ul-Fitr). Someone came to me and started scooping some of the foodstuff of (Zakat) with both hands. I caught him and told him that I would take him to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ).” Then Abu Huraira told the whole narration and added “He (i.e. the thief) said, ‘Whenever you go to your bed, recite the Verse of “Al-Kursi” (2.255) for then a guardian from Allah will be guarding you, and Satan will not approach you till dawn.’ ” On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “He told you the truth, though he is a liar, and he (the thief) himself was the Satan.” Sahih al-Bukhari

Keep Shaitan Away From The House

Reciting Ayatul Kursi in the home keeps the Shaitan far away from it.

Narrated ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila:
that Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari had a store house in which he kept dates. A ghoul would come and take from it, so he complained about that to the Prophet (ﷺ). So he said: “Go, and when you see her say: ‘In the Name of Allah, answer to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).'” He said: “So I caught her, and she swore that she would not return, so I released her.” He went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said: “What did your captive do?” He said: “She swore not to return.” He said: “She has lied, and she will come again to lie.” He said: “I caught her another time and she swore that she would not return, so I released her, and went to the Prophet (ﷺ).” He said: “What did your captive do?” He said: “She swore that she would not return.” So he said: “She lied and she will come again to lie.” So he caught her and said: “I shall not let you go until you accompany me to the Prophet (ﷺ).” She said: “I shall tell you something: If you recite Ayat Al-Kursi in your home, then no Shaitan, nor any other shall come near you.” So he went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said: “What did your captive do?” He said: “I informed him of what she said, and he said: ‘She told the truth and she is a continuous liar.'” Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Last Two Ayats Of Surah Baqarah

The last two ayats of Surah Baqarah are 2:285-286.

A hadith in Sunan Ibn Majah says that when a person recites the last two ayats of Surah Baqarah at night, its enough for him. This means that its very beneficial for us to recite and ponder over these verses.

It was narrated from Abu Mas’ud that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever recites the last two Verses of Surat Al-Baqarah at night, that will be sufficient for him.” Sunan Ibn Majah

Keep The Shaitan Away From Your House

Reciting the last two ayats of Surah Baqarah also have the effect of keeping the Shaitan away from your home.

Narrated An-Nu’man bin Bashir:
that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Indeed Allah wrote in a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and He sent down two Ayat from it to end Surat Al-Baqarah with. If they are recited for three nights in a home, no Shaitan shall come near it.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Receive The Barakah Of What They Contain

Barakah is goodness that will continue to grow more than expected. The English translation of barakah is blessings.

Reciting Surah Fatiha and the last two ayats of Surah Baqarah gives you the barakah of what they contain.

Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:
While Jibril (Gabriel) was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), he heard a sound above him. He lifted his head, and said: “This is a gate which has been opened in heaven today. It was never opened before.” Then an angel descended through it, he said: “This is an angel who has come down to earth. He never came down before.” He sent greetings and said: “Rejoice with two lights given to you. Such lights were not given to any Prophet before you. These (lights) are: Fatihah-til-Kitab (Surat Al-Fatihah), and the concluding Ayat of Surat Al-Baqarah. You will never recite a word from them without being given the blessings it contains.” Riyad as-Salihin

What Kind Of Barakah Is contained?

We ask for Allah’s help.

It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Qur’an 1:5

We ask for guidance from Allah.

Guide us to the straight path –
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. Qur’an 1:6-7

We ask for Allah’s forgiveness.

…[We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord Qur’an 2:285

…”Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. Qur’an 2:286

We ask for victory from Allah.

…give us victory over the disbelieving people.” Qur’an 2:286

Just imagine all of the goodness that could come into your life if you develop a strong relationship with Surah Baqarah. Surah Baqarah benefits the believer in this life and in the next.

Abandoning Surah Baqarah will lead to regret on the Day of Judgement.

Surah Kahf Benefits

The Prophet said that whoever memorises the first ten verses of Surah Kahf [18:1-10] will be be protected from the fitnah (trial) of Dajjal (Antichrist).

In another narration, its recommended to memorise the last ten verses [18:101-110].

Its best to memorise both.

Abu al-Darda’ reported the prophet (ﷺ) as saying:
If anyone memorizes ten verses from the beginning of surat al-Kahf, he will be protected from the trial of Dajjal (Antichrist).
Abu Dawud said: In this way Hashim al-dastawa’I transmitted it from Qatadah, but he said: “If anyone memorizes the closing verses of surat al-Kahf.” Shu’bah narrated from Qatadah the words “from the end of al-Kahf. Sunan Abi Dawud

The trial of Dajjal will be one of the greatest to afflict humanity.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Shall I not tell you about the Dajjal a story of which no prophet told his nation? The Dajjall is one-eyed and will bring with him what will resemble Hell and Paradise, and what he will call Paradise will be actually Hell; so I warn you (against him) as Noah warned his nation against him.” Sahih al-Bukhari

Surah Yasin Benefits

Important surahs to read

Surah Yasin is regarded as ‘the heart of the Qur’an’. There’s a great reward for reciting this surah, which is narrated below.

Narrated Anas:
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed for everything there is a heart, and the Qur’an’s heart is Ya Sin. Whoever recites Ya Sin, then for its recitation, Allah writes for him that he recited the Qur’an ten times.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Its recommended to recite Surah Yasin over people when they’re dying.

Narrated Ma’qil ibn Yasar:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Recite Surah Ya-Sin over your dying men. This is the version of Ibn al-Ala’ Sunan Abi Dawud

Recite Surah Yasin at night for forgiveness.

Al-Hafiz Abu Ya`la recorded that Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The Messenger of Allah said:
Whoever recites Ya Sin in the night, will wake up forgiven, and whoever recites Ha Mim in which Ad-Dukhan (the Smoke) is mentioned, will wake up forgiven. Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Surah Waqiah Benefits

Under the caliphates of ‘Umar and ‘Uthman (رضي الله عنهم), ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) held administrative and diplomatic duties. When he passed away, he had very little wealth to leave behind for his daughters.

In the narration below, ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) said that he taught his daughters to recite Surah Waqiah every night in order to ward off poverty.

Ibn Kathir cites a story on the authority of Ibn ‘Asakir from Abu Zabyah that when Sayyidna ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) was lying on his deathbed, Sayyidna ‘Uthman (رضي الله عنه) paid him a visit and the following conversation ensued.

‘Uthman (رضي الله عنه): “What are you suffering from?”
Ibn Masud (رضي الله عنه): “from my sins.”
‘Uthman (رضي الله عنه): “Do you desire anything?”
Ibn Masud (رضي الله عنه): Yes, Allah’s mercy.”
‘Uthman (رضي الله عنه): “Shall I call a doctor for you?”
Ibn Masud (رضي الله عنه): “It is the doctor who has given me the ailment.”
‘Uthman (رضي الله عنه): “May I send you an allowance from the public treasury?”
Ibn Masud (رضي الله عنه): “I have no need for it.”
‘Uthman (رضي الله عنه): “Accept it, [please]. You are leaving daughters behind you. It will help them.”
Ibn Masud (رضي الله عنه): “You are worried about my daughters that they must not suffer from poverty. I have no such worry, because I have instructed them to recite Surah Al-Waqi’ah every night. I have heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, ‘Whoever recites surah Al-Waqi’ah every night will never suffer from poverty’.” Maariful Qur’an.

Surah Mulk Benefits

On the Day of Judgement, Surah Mulk can make a case on behalf of a Muslim. It intercedes for its companion until Allah forgives him for his sins.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “There is a Surah in the Qur’an which contains thirty Ayat which kept interceding for a man until his sins are forgiven. This Surah is ‘Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion.’ (Surat Al-Mulk 67).” Riyad as-Salihin

Surah Ikhlas Benefits

Surah Ikhlas Is Equal To One Third Of The Quran

Surah Ikhlas is just four ayats long. But its a very important surah that carries a lot of benefits.

There’s several ahadith in which the Prophet (ﷺ) described Surah Ikhlas as being equal to one third of the Qur’an.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Surat Ikhlas is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’an.” Riyad as-Salihin

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported about Surat Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112):
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, it is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’an.”  Riyad as-Salihin

How To Read One Third Of The Quran In One Night?

Just recite Surah Ikhlas!

According to another version, he (ﷺ) said to his Companions, “Is anyone of you incapable of reciting one-third of the Qur’an in one night?” They considered it burdensome and said: “O Messenger of Allah, which of us can afford to do that?” He (ﷺ) said, “Surat Al-Ikhlas [Say: He is Allah (the) One] is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’an.” Riyad as-Salihin

It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
Get together, for I am going to recite one-third of the Qur’an before you. And those who could get together gathered there. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out and recited:” Say: He, Allah, is One.” He then entered (his house). Some of us said to the others: Perhaps there has been some news from the heaven on account of which he has gone Inside (the house). The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) again came out and said: I told you that I was going to recite one-third of the Qur’in; keep in mind, this (Surah Ikhlas) is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’an. Sahih Muslim

Repeating Your Recitation Of Surah Ikhlas

Recite this short surah over and over again and reap the rewards.

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:
A man heard another man reciting: Surat-ul-Ikhlas (The Unity) ‘Say: He is Allah, the One (112) and he was repeating it. The next morning he came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and mentioned the whole story to him as if he regarded the recitation of that Sura as insufficient On that, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! That (Sura No. 112) equals one-third of the Qur’an.” Sahih al-Bukhari

Your Love For Surah Ikhlas Could Admit You To Jannah

The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions (رضي الله عنهم) had a special love for Surah Ikhlas.

Having a strong appreciation of this surah could help lead you to Jannah. Recite it and ponder over its meaning regularly.

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
A man said: “O Messenger of Allah! I love Surat-Al-Ikhlas [Say: He is Allah, (the) One].” He (ﷺ) said, “Your love for it will admit you to Jannah.” Riyad as-Salihin

In the below narration, its described that a man always recited Surah Ikhlas at the end of his prayer.

When asked about this, he said he loved to recite it because it reminds people of the Attributes of Allah and he just really enjoyed reciting it.

At this, the Prophet said that Allah loves him for his love of Surah Ikhlas.

‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:
Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ) appointed a man in charge of an army unit who led them in Salat (prayer); he always concluded his recitation with Surat Al-Ikhlas: “Say (O Muhammad (ﷺ)): ‘He is Allah, (the) One. Allah-us-Samad (Allah – the Self-Sufficient). He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none equal or comparable to Him.”‘ (112:1-4) Upon their return to Al-Madinah, they mentioned this to Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), who said, “Ask him why he does so?” He was asked and he said, “This Surah contains the Attributes of Allah, the Gracious, and I love to recite it. Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then told them, “Tell him that Allah loves him”. Riyad as-Salihin

Surah Ikhlas, Falaq And Nas

Reciting these three surahs at dawn and at dusk will suffice for you in all aspects.

‘Abdullah bin Khubaib (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me, “Recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Al- Mu’awwidhatain (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) three times at dawn and dusk. It will suffice you in all respects.” Riyad as-Salihin
