Sufficient For Us Is Allah: Ibrahim (Alayhi Salam)

Sufficient For Us Is Allah: Ibrahim (Alayhi Salam)

A dua that you’ll find in Surah Ali ‘Imran is, “Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.” This dua had been made by both Prophet Ibrahim (alayhi salam) and Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

The “Sufficient for us is Allah” dua is also mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah and Surah Az-Zumar. Just with a couple of slight variations made to it.

Dua Of Prophet Ibrahim (Alayhi Salam)

.حسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل نعم المولى ونعم النصير

Hasbuna Allah wa ni’ma al Wakil, ni’ma al Mowla wa ni’ma al Nasir.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
‘Allah is Sufficient for us and He Is the Best Disposer of affairs,” was said by Abraham when he was thrown into the fire; and it was said by Muhammad when they (i.e. hypocrites) said, “A great army is gathering against you, therefore, fear them,” but it only increased their faith and they said: “Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs, for us).” (3.173)

Sahih al-Bukhari

Why Was Prophet Ibrahim (Alayhi Salam) Thrown Into The Fire?

Thrown into the fire

Prophet Ibrahim’s mission was to preach tawheed (believing in the Oneness of Allah) to his people, who were idol worshippers.

And We had certainly given Abraham his sound judgement before, and We were of him well-Knowing
When he said to his father and his people, “What are these statues to which you are devoted?”
They said, “We found our fathers worshippers of them.”
He said, “You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error.”

Qur’an 21:51-54

The people were mindlessly following the religion of their forefathers. In order to prove a point to them, Prophet Ibrahim (alayhi salam) destroyed their idols.

After all, if their idols were gods, wouldn’t they be able to defend themselves?

So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question].

Qur’an 21:58

When the people came to know that it was Ibrahim (alayhi salam) who was responsible for destroying their idols, they found him and began to question him.

Here’s what Ibrahim (alayhi salam) had to say:

He said, “Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you?
Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?”
They said, “Burn him and support your gods – if you are to act.”

Qur’an 21:66-68

A Test Of Tawakkul

Now here was the true test. The people were going to throw Ibrahim (alayhi salam) into a massive pit of fire. In order to prove his message of tawheed to the people (and save his life), he had to have complete tawakkul (reliance) on Allah.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
The last statement of Abraham when he was thrown into the fire was:–“Allah is Sufficient for us and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs for us).” (3.173)

Sahih al-Bukhari

Allah responded to his dua by removing the scalding, burning sensations of the fire. Ibrahim (alayhi salam) came out of the fire unscathed.

Allah said, “O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham.”

Qur’an 21:69

This incident shows that the only being that has control over our well-being is Allah. He is the one that brings benefit or harm over His creation.

Dua Of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

Sufficient for me is Allah; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.

But if they turn away, [O Muhammad], say, “Sufficient for me is Allah; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.”

Qur’an 9:129

Upon Him Alone Rely The Wise Reliers

.حَسْبِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ يَتَوَكَّلُ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ

Hasbiyal lahu ‘alaihi tatawakkalul mutawakkiloon.

Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him alone rely the wise reliers.

And if you asked them, “Who created the heavens and the earth?” they would surely say, “Allah.” Say, “Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? If Allah intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?” Say, “Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers.”

Qur’an 39:38
