Sunnah Surahs For Salah: Revive A Sunnah

I took it upon myself to compile a list of sunnah surahs for salah. Its not a must to recite these particular surahs. You can recite any surahs or ayat that you wish during salah.

Still, as Muslims, we should strive to do as many sunnah deeds as we’re able to.

These are the sunnah surahs for salah that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) recited during Fajr, Dhuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers.

How Many Verses?

The Messenger of Allah used to recite between sixty to one hundred ayat during Salat al-Fajr. If we want to pray Fajr the sunnah way, this is the number that we should be aiming for.

It was narrated from Abu Barzah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite between sixty and one hundred (Verses) in Fajr prayer. Sunan Ibn Majah

Which Surahs Did The Prophet Recite In The Sunnah Prayer?

Surah Al-Kafiroon And Surah Al-Ikhlas

For the two sunnah rak’ah of Salat al-Fajr, Rasool Allah (ﷺ) frequently recited Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas. These are short surahs that are easy to memorise.

Abdullah bin Mas’ud narrated:
“I can not enumerate (how many times) I heard Allah’s Messenger (S) reciting – in the two Rak’ah after Al-Maghrib and the two Rak’ah before Salatul-Fajr with: ‘Say: O you disbelievers!’ and ‘Say: He is Allah the One.'” Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Which Surahs Did The Prophet (ﷺ) Recite In Salat al-Fajr?

Surah Qaf

There are a few narrations about Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) reciting Surah Qaf during Salat al-Fajr.

Jabir b. Samura reported:
The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in the morning prayer” Qaf. By the Glorious Quran.” and his prayer afterward shortened. Sahih Muslim

This narration makes mention of the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting the 10th ayah of Surah Qaf during Salat al-Fajr.

Qutbah bin Malik narrated:
“I heard Allah’s Messenger reciting for Fajr: ‘And tall date palms’ in the first rak’ah. Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Surah At-Takwir

Surah At-Takwir is another Surah that the Prophet recited during Salat al-Fajr.

It was narrated that Amr bin Huraith said:
“I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting: ‘When the sun is wound round’ in Fajr.” Sunan an-Nasa’i

Its reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited the 15th and 16th ayat of Surah At-Takwir.

It was narrated that ‘Amr bin Huraith said:
“I performed prayer with the Prophet (ﷺ) when he was reciting in the Fajr, and it is as if I can hear him reciting: ‘So verily, I swear by the planets that recede. And by the planets that move swiftly and hide themselves.’”[81:15-16] » Sunan Ibn Majah

There’s also a report of the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting the 17th ayah of the Surah.

‘Amr b. Huwairith reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recite in the morning prayer” Wa’l-lail-i-idhd ‘As’asa” (ixxxi. 17). Sahih Muslim

Surah Al-Falaq And Surah An-Nas

Al-Mua’awwidhatain are the last two surahs of the Qur’an, which are called Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas. The Prophet (ﷺ) recited these during Salat al-Fajr. These are short surahs that are great for those new to learning to pray and memorising the Qur’an.

It was narrated from Uqbah bin Amr that:
He asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about Al-Mua’awwidhatain. Uqbah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in praying Fajr and recited them.” Sunan an-Nasa’i

Which Surahs Did The Prophet (ﷺ) Recite On Fridays?

Surah As-Sajdah And Surah Al-Insan

The Prophet (ﷺ) recited two surahs for the Fajr prayer on Fridays. In the first rak’ah, he would recite the entire Surah As-Sajdah and in the second rak’ah he would recite the whole Surah Al-Insan (or Surah-Ad-Dahr, as its also called).

Narrated Abu Huraira:
On Fridays the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite Alif Lam Mim Tanzil-As-Sajda (in the first rak`a) and Hal ata `alal-insani i.e. Surat ad-Dahr (LXXVI) (in the second rak`a), in the Fajr prayer. Sahih al-Bukhari

Ibn Abbas narrated:
“For the Fajr prayer on Friday, Allah’s Messenger would recite: Alif Lam Mem (which is) revealed in (Surat) As-Sajdah and, Has there not been over man.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Salat al-Dhuhr And Salat al-‘Asr

The noon and afternoon prayers

Surah Al-Layl

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) recited Surah Al-Layl in both Dhuhr and ‘Asr prayers.

Jabir b. Samura reported:
The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in the noon prayer:” By the night when it envelopes” (xcii.), and in the afternoon like this, but he prolonged the morning prayer as compared to that (noon and afternoon prayers). Sahih Muslim

Surah At-Tariq And Surah Al-Buruj

Rasool Allah (ﷺ) also recited Surah At-Tariq and Surah Al-Buruj in both Dhuhr and ‘Asr prayers. Its also mentioned in the below hadith that the Prophet (ﷺ) would recite similar surahs of equal length. These surahs are 17 and 22 ayat long respectively.

Narrated Jabir ibn Samurah:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in the noon and afternoon prayer: “By the Heaven and the Morning Star” (Surah 86) and “By the Heaven, holding mansions of the stars” (Surah 85) and similar surahs of equal length. Sunan Abi Dawud

Surah At-Tur

Surah At-Tur is a sunnah surah to be recited during Salat al-Maghrib.

Narrated Jubair:
(who was among the captives of the Battle of Badr) I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting ‘Surat-at-Tur’ in the Maghrib prayer. Sahih al-Bukhari

Surah Al-Mursalat

There are a few narrations about Rasool Allah (ﷺ) reciting Surah Al-Mursalat.

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas from his mother that:
She heard the Prophet (ﷺ) recite Al-Mursalat in Maghrib. Sunan an-Nasa’i

Narrated Um Al-Fadl bint Al-Harith:
I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting Surat-al-Mursalat `Urfan (77) in the Maghrib prayer, and after that prayer he did not lead us in any prayer till he died. Sahih al-Bukhari

Surah Al-A’raf

The Prophet is reported to have recited Surah Al-A’raf during Salat al-Maghrib.

It was narrated from Aishah that:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited Surat Al-A’raf in maghrib and split it between two rak’ahs. Sunan an-Nasa’i

Zaid bin Thabit found out that Abu Abdul-Malik recited short surahs during Salat al-Maghrib. These were Surah Al-Ikhlas and Surah Al-Kawthar.

At this, Zaid told him that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would recite Surah Al-A’raf, implying that it would be better for him if he were to recite this longer surah instead.

It was narrated from Zaid bin Thabit that:
He said to Marwan: “O Abu Abdul-Malik, do you recite: ‘Say: He is Allah, (the) One’ and ‘Verily, We have granted you Al-Kawthar’ in maghrib?” He said: “Yes.” He (Zaid) said: “I swear by Allah, I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reciting the longer of the two long surahs in it: ‘Alif-Lam-Mim-Sad.'” Sunan an-Nasa’i

Surah Ad-Dukhan

A fourth surah that the Prophet (ﷺ) is reported to have recited during Salat al-Maghrib is Surah Ad-Dukhan.

Mu’awiyah bin Abdullah bin Ja’far narrated that Abdullah bin ‘Utbah bin Mas’ud told him that:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited ‘Ha- Mim Ad-Dukhan’ in Maghrib. Sunan an-Nasa’i

Which Surahs Did The Prophet Recite In The Sunnah Prayer?

Surah Al-Kafirun And Surah Al-Ikhlas

There’s a few ahadith that stress that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) would frequently recite Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas. This was in both the Fajr and Maghrib sunnah prayers.

Abdullah bin Mas’ud narrated:

Salat al-‘Isha

Surah At-Tin

The narration below states that the Prophet (ﷺ) would recite Surah At-Tin during Salat al-Isha.

Narrated Al-Bara’:
I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting Surat at-Tin waz Zaitun (By the Fig and the Olive) in the `Isha’ prayer and I have never heard anybody with a better voice or recitation than his. Sahih al-Bukhari

Surah Ash-Shams

Surah Ash-Shams was recited by Allah’s Messenger during Salat al-‘Isha.

Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated that his father (Buraidah) said:
“Allah’s Messenger would recite: By the sun and its brightness, or similar Surah for the latter Isha (prayer).” Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Salat al-Witr

Surah Al-A’la, Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas

Its narrated that Rasool Allah (ﷺ) would recite Surah Al-A’la, Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas during Salat al-Witr.

Ibn Abbas narrated:
“Allah’s Messenger would recite during Al-Witr: “Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High’ and, ‘Say: O you disbelievers!’ and, ‘Say: Allah is One,’ in each Rak’ah.”

Final Thoughts

Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) presence was a gift from Allah. He is the best of Allah’s creation.

His purpose as a prophet was to convey the message of Allah through the Qur’an. His lifestyle, speech, mannerisms and actions is the best example. He was a living embodiment of the entire message in order so that we can follow it to the best of our ability.

Following sunnah surahs for salah is one way to revive a sunnah. Doing so rewards the believer with extra hasanat (good deeds).

When we’re following the sunnah we’re on the right track to achieving success in this world and in the hereafter.
