Tricks Of Shaitan: How Shaitan Beautifies Sin

Tricks Of Shaitan: How Shaitan Beautifies Sin

Understanding the tricks of Shaitan is the key to keeping our iman strong. When we fall victim to the tricks of Shaitan, we become distracted from the remembrance of Allah.

In the Qur’an, Allah tells us that Shaitan is an enemy to us.

Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.

Qur’an 35:6

The solution to this is that we need to take Shaitan as an enemy. In order to do that, we need to learn how to pick up on the tricks of Shaitan. Its only then that we can focus our mindset on following the command of Allah in the Qur’an and the sunnah.

Shaitan Will Act As A Friend Or An Advisor To You

An enemy can approach you in a number of different ways.

He can come across as an open, clear-cut enemy:

  • “I’m your enemy.”
  • “I want your demise.”
  • “I hate you.”

You automatically wouldn’t trust someone if they spoke to you like that. You’d want to keep your distance away from that person.

Enemies can also deceive you by approaching you like this:

  • “I’m your friend.”
  • “I’m your advisor.”

If someone spoke to you like that, you’d naturally drop your guard a little bit. If you didn’t know that he’s an enemy to you, you’d probably take him as a friend or an advisor.

These are the tricks of Shaitan that he uses in order to trap mankind.

Shaitan Uses Deception

Shaitan constantly tries to show immoral things as being acceptable. He also displays false things as being the truth.

This is exactly what Iblis did to Prophet Adam (alayhi salam) and his wife, Hawa (alayha salam). Iblis deceived them into eating from a tree that Allah had made forbidden for them to eat.

Here’s what Iblis did to Adam (alayhi salam) and Hawa (alayha salam):

  • Whispered to them a false statement that eating from the tree would cause them to become angels or spend eternal life in Jannah.
  • Swore by Allah that he is a friend or advisor to them.

And “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.”
But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, “Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal.”
And he swore [by Allah] to them, “Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors.”
So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?”

Qur’an 7:19-22

See how Iblis flat-out lied to Adam (alayhi salam) and Hawa (alayha salam)?

He made the haram appear so beautiful to them that they eventually let their guards down and disobeyed Allah. Despite knowing full well that it was haram to begin with.

Tricks of Shaitan
“There’s still plenty of time till sunrise, keep sleeping”

Have you ever had this thought cross your mind at Fajr time?

  • “Disobey Allah.”

No believing Muslim has thoughts like this.

You’re far more likely to have thoughts like these:

  • “Stay in bed, its too cold outside.”
  • “There’s still plenty of time till sunrise, keep sleeping.”
  • “Getting up to make wudu is too tiring.”
  • “Salah takes too much time.”
  • “Check out what you missed on social media last night.”

These statements are a lot more seemingly innocent than “disobey Allah”. This is how Shaitan comes to you as a friend or advisor.

If you let waswasa like this consume you, you’ll start to push your guilt to one side. You’ll start to fool yourself that its a good idea to stay in bed, putting your chances of praying on time in jeopardy.

Your focus shifts on the dunya that’s right here and right now, instead of on your success in the akhirah.

Overcome Waswasa At Fajr Time

Once you recognise waswasa for what it is, fight it off by following the teachings of the Qur’an and the sunnah.

Keep your focus on your goal of making it into Jannah in the hereafter. It’s time to start exercising your willpower. Disregard your desires that only benefit you in dunya.

Here’s what to do at Fajr time:

  • Make du’a for after waking up
  • Perform wudu
  • Pray Fajr

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “During your sleep, Satan knots three knots at the back of the head of each of you, and he breathes the following words at each knot, ‘The night is, long, so keep on sleeping,’ If that person wakes up and celebrates the praises of Allah, then one knot is undone, and when he performs ablution the second knot is undone, and when he prays, all the knots are undone, and he gets up in the morning lively and in good spirits, otherwise he gets up in low spirits and lethargic.”

Sahih al-Bukhari

Remind yourself why completing fard and sunnah prayers on time are so important.

Your salah will be the first thing to be questioned on the Day of Resurrection.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“The first thing for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be his Salah. If it is found to be complete then it will be recorded as complete, and if anything is lacking He will say: ‘Look and see if you can find any voluntary prayers with which to complete what he neglected of his obligatory prayers.’ Then the rest of his deeds will be reckoned in like manner.”

Shaitan Is Patient

Shaitan knows that he has a lot of time on his hands to lead mankind astray.

[Allah] said, “Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled.
And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense.”
He said,”My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected.”
[Allah] said, “So indeed, you are of those reprieved
Until the Day of the time well-known.”

Qur’an 15:34-38

How Shaitan Slowly Causes Major Sins To Happen

Shaitan is in no rush. Instead, he misguides people step-by-step.

  • “Zainab, go commit zina.”

That’s not his style.

Zainab is just a random name that I came up with, by the way.

He can’t cause people to commit major sins right away. What he does do is influence people to commit minor sin upon minor sin. Eventually, they build up to become major sins.

  • “Zainab, go and discuss Islam with him. Its just for da’wah.”
  • “Zainab, Allah knows your intentions. You’re strong. Just lower your gaze, you’ll be fine.”

Next thing you know, Zainab, who had good intentions, starts to develop feelings for her brother in Islam.

She exchanges her number with the brother. They message each other back and forth. The conversation shifts from Islam to current events.

Then it gets personal.

  • “What do you like to do in your spare time?”

Then it gets inappropriate. They start to exchange photos and meet up together, alone.

All they can think about is each other. Shaitan has beautified the haram so much that remembrance of Allah and prayer is out the window.

Their haram relationship continues to spiral out of control until they commit zina together.

Shaitan claps his hands together and says, “khalas, my work here is done.”

Reality hits Zainab. She feels a weight form in the pit of her stomach. Her eyes well up with tears.

  • “Ya Allah, what have I done?”

She knows that she has two choices:

  1. Make their relationship become halal by marrying the brother in Islam.
  2. Repent to Allah.

Repent To Allah

If you ever find yourself in a situation like Zainab’s, don’t despair. Allah is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”

Qur’an 39:53

Here’s how you can repent to Allah today:

Make a promise to never commit zina again. Don’t allow yourself to even come close to zina.

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

Qur’an 17:32

Cease all communication with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Block and delete them. Don’t even explain to them why.

Avoid free-mixing. Stick to giving da’wah to people of the same gender as you.

Recommend a knowledgeable mahram or a shaykh to talk to any non-mahram that’s in need of learning something about Islam.

Ibn ‘Umar narrated:
“Umar delivered a Khutbah to us at Al-Jabiyah. He said: ‘O you people! Indeed I have stood among you as the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) stood among us, and he said: ‘…A man is not alone with a woman but the third of them is Ash-Shaitan.'”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Don’t tell anyone about your sin. Its just between you and Allah. Hopefully any friends or family who witnessed your sin also have the decency not to tell anyone.

Make du’a to Allah for forgiveness and guidance.

Perform Salat al-Tawbah.

Make the intention of marrying someone who’s pious and righteous in a halal way.

Like I mentioned before, no believing Muslim has thoughts that are straight up like, “disobey Allah”. Shaitan has a way of making questionable actions seem like good deeds and then gets you when you’re in that split-second moment of weakness.

Shaitan Sits And Waits In Your Path

It was narrated that Sabrah bin Abi Fakih said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘the Shaitan sits in the paths of the son of Adam. He sits waiting for him, in the path to Islam, and he says: Will you accept Islam, and leave your religion, and the religion of your forefathers? But he disobeys him and accepts Islam. Then he sits waiting for him, on the path to emigration, and he says: Will you emigrate and leave behind your land and sky? The one who emigrates is like a horse tethered to a peg. But he disobeys him and emigrates. Then he sits, waiting for him, on the path to Jihad, and he says: Will you fight in Jihad when it will cost you your life and your wealth? You will fight and be killed, and your wife will remarry, and your wealth will be divided. But he disobeys him and fights in Jihad.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever does that, then he had a right from Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, that He will admit him to paradise. Whoever is killed, he has a right from Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, that He will admit him to Paradise. If he is drowned, he has a right from Allah that He will admit him to paradise, or whoever is thrown by his mount and his neck is broken, he had a right from Allah that he will admit him to Paradise.'”

Shaitan Makes Haram Things Seem Attractive To People

Shaitan’s aim is to avert you from the remembrance of Allah

One of the tricks of Shaitan is making you feel as though you can’t enjoy life without doing haram things:

  • “Have fun.”
  • “Everyone else is doing it.”
  • “Don’t be so extreme, loosen up a little.”

[Iblees] said, “My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all
Except, among them, Your chosen servants.”

Qur’an 15:39-40

What Type Of Haram Things?

In particular, Shaitan will make the following haram things seem desirable to do:

  • Drinking alcoholic drinks
  • Gambling
  • Committing shirk

Shaitan gives haram things a less harsh-sounding name.

  • Alcoholic drinks become a refreshment.
  • Gambling becomes the lottery.
  • Mocking Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) becomes freedom of speech.
  • Adultery becomes an affair.
  • Interest becomes profit.

Shaitan can do this all he likes. At the end of the day, you and I know that halal is halal and haram is haram.

It doesn’t matter how much people try to normalise haram things and make them seem acceptable. Even if everyone’s doing it.

O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.
Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?

Qur’an 5:90-91

Final Thoughts

The goal of Shaitan is to distract you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. He preoccupies you with chasing worldly desires that waste time and have no real benefit for you.

Gaining fame and recognition from people for the wrong reasons is a fitnah we need to be aware of and avoid. So is collecting an excess of money and fulfilling temporary pleasures.

Are these things really going to matter on the Day of Judgement? Will they work for us or against us on the Day where there will be no shade but Allah’s?

How many of us acquire things that we don’t even really need just to impress people that we don’t even know?

Now is the time to reflect. Ask Allah to keep our intentions and actions pure in your du’as.
